There are many factors that make a good colour laser MFP in terms of performance but the Samsung CLX-2160 seems to be trying it a different way, its cheap, very cheap. The hidden costs of a printer are always in the printer cartridges and luckily the Samsung clx-2160 toner cartridges don’t hold any nasty surprises, they are some of the cheapest Samsung toner cartridges on the market and although they printer less than usual they still maintain a good cost per page ratio (2p black and 9p colour). The clx-2160 is amazingly small considering it is three devices in one offering colour printing scanning and photo copying, it measures in a just 413 x 333 x 353mm. Print speed a another important factor of a laser printer and the clx-2160 is reasonably quick at mono printing (16ppm) but lacks speed when it comes to colour prints (4ppm). The scanning and copying capabilities of the 2160 are pretty basic as you would except at this end of the market but they are easy to use, especially the one touch copy function. Printing quality in mono is the clx-2160’s strongest point, text is always clear and sharp even when printing small fonts. Colour printing is a different story though, basic graphics are ok but anything with a variety of colour tones such as photographs is bit beyond the capabilities of the 2160, don’t get me wrong it can print photos as it has a reasonably good print resolution of 2400 x 600dpi, but the colour tones are dull and makes the photos look washed out. Overall the Samsung CLX-2160 is as accepted, it delivers on the things it is designed to but has some inevitable compromises which are to be excepted when you consider its low price.
